from Army chief to cajun chef
at LJ'Z Backyard Bayou, every plate tells a story
Larry P. Johnson, a retired Chief Warrant Officer from Franklin, Louisiana, spent over 20 years serving his country with discipline, dedication, and leadership. Now, alongside his best friend and wife, Wendy, they serve up something different--authentic Cajun-Creole comfort food that brings people together.
What started as cooking for Soldiers and friends on weekends has grown into a community gathering place where Louisiana flavor meets Alabama hospitality. Larry's love for food comes from family traditions--recipes passed down from his mother, aunts, grandmother, cousins, friends---mixed with the teamwork and drive he carried from the Army. At LJ'z, every plate carries that story: good food, good people, and the joy of bringing families together.

Our Love For Food
Larry and his wife, Wendy, a veteran, first launched their dream as a catering and events company. What started with pan-size meal requests and catering for military functions quickly grew into something more. They realized there was a need for authentic Cajun-Creole food in Northern Alabama--a taste of Louisiana felt like home.
With word of mouth spreading, LJ'z Backyard Bayou was born. Built on faith, family, and flavor, the restaurant reflects their belief that food is more than a meal---its a way to bring people together. Married for over 22 years, Larry and Wendy are proud parents of three daughters, who remind them daily why creating a space for family, food, and community matters.
